Psychic Detectives - August 1, 2008 - Bob Lee
Are they for real? A look at three of the nation's top psychics and the lawmen they worked with
Investigators close cases—that's their job. Some cases, however, drift on for years, creating a burden an investigator may have to shoulder for their entire career, or even for the rest of their life. Cases like these often cause a dilemma for the law enforcement community, leading them to try unusual methods of investigation. One of those methods is using psychic detectives, a popular topic on cable and mainstream TV.
The interest in psychic detectives, though, isn't restricted to the general public. Their use by police agencies has been well documented for some time. The results, however, are open to endless debate.
In this article, sample cases from three of the nation's top psychics, along with the officials they worked with, are profiled. The psychics were selected based on their depth of experience working with law enforcement. All of them are women who have appeared on numerous TV shows, and one even had had her own radio show.

Annette Martin, 70, California
Annette Martin has known since she was seven that she possessed abilities other children didn't. It started one day when she had a premonition of being hurt by a group of playmates, and 10 minutes later they turned on her.
As a child, she was known as having a "big voice," which led to a career as an opera singer, where she traveled around the world performing in lead roles.
Always outgoing and effusive, Martin is a natural communicator. She has taught classes on the paranormal at the University of Hawaii and Stanford University and has been the host of her own psychic radio show in Hawaii.
In 2006, Martin testified in a murder trial where the defendant was a psychic. "I am the first psychic ever declared as an expert witness," says Martin. "The defendant's attorneys wanted me to prove that psychic detectives do
Dennis Prado—Missing Person
On May 1, 1997, Dennis Prado, 71, a former paratrooper, went missing from his apartment complex near San Pedro Valley County Park, Calif. A popular spot for hikers, its formidable terrain is not to be taken lightly. Park advisories warn visitors to avoid wandering off marked trails, as it may take days or weeks for a search and rescue team to find them.
Two and a half months later, Prado was still missing, and his family contacted then-Sgt. Fernando Realyvasquez of the Pacifica Police Department. They had heard of Annette Martin and wanted to see if she could help. "As you can imagine," said Realyvasquez, "I rolled my eyes like most people would. But I ran the request by my chief who said, 'It won't hurt to try it if it will make the family feel better.'"
Realyvasquez met with Martin at her office. Martin never went to the park or visited Prado's apartment. "Sgt. Realyvasquez brought me an armload of maps," Martin said, "including a topographic map of the park and a picture of Prado. I took three deep breaths and went into a trance, while holding his photo. I became Prado and could see the trail he had taken as he walked away from the apartment complex and into the park. I could see where he had fallen down and died of a heart attack. I ran my right hand over the topographic map and felt a warm spot coming off of the map. I circled that spot and told Sgt. Realyvasquez that is where Prado would be found. I also drew a rough map on legal notebook paper, of where Prado's body would be found in some bushes, just off of a trail leading away from his apartment and into the park. I wrote the date July 15, 1997, at the top of this map."
"The size of the circle she had drawn on the topographic map," said Realyvasquez, "was a quarter of an inch, which on this map equaled about an eighth of a mile across. After this, I got together with a couple of other officers and went to look for him, but didn't find anything."
A couple of days later, Roberta Houser, a search and rescue volunteer came to Realyvasquez's office.
"She had heard about Martin," said Realyvasquez, "and wanted to listen to the tape recording of what she had said. I let her listen to the tape and showed her on the topographic map where Martin had circled it."
Houser was familiar with the area, because she and other volunteers had combed it once or twice already, looking for Prado during the initial search.
On the morning of July 19, 1997, Houser and another search and rescue worker, together with a cadaver dog, entered the park at 8 a.m. By 9:15 a.m., they found Prado's decomposed body 15 feet off of a trail in some brush, inside the area Martin had circled on the topographic map. "I'm just as skeptical as I was before," said Realyvasquez, "but the only reason we found Prado was because of the information Martin provided."
Conclusion
This article was written with law officers in mind, knowing that they are fact-driven and reality-based, and that they would put more stock in what their fellow officers have to say about psychics.
Dave Heater, who retired as chief of detectives, sums it up this way: "I look at psychics as tools, the same as I would a polygraph examiner. Psychics can only provide pieces of the puzzle. It's still up to the detective to put all of those pieces together."

It was a successful lecture with standing room only.
Martin and Auerbach discussed their forthcoming book, "Have Ghosts? We'll Travel - San Francisco," dealing with a unique take on some key San Francisco hauntings : the perspectives of parapsychologist and psychic. They will talk about the locations to be covered in the book, including Alcatraz and the Moss Beach Distillery, discuss how they work from different angles and how that work comes together, and focus in on one or two of the cases in depth.
The book, from Quill Driver Books, is the first in proposed series looking closely and more in depth at haunted places in California than other books have previously done, with the added spin of the psychic and parapsychologist perspectives.

I spoke with you on the radio, Fri nite on HVRNC. Thanks so much for the info! I got into my pulmonary specialist right away (he takes care of my Pulmonary Hypertension & Sarcoidosis). You were right on the money! I'm having a flare up, and he was glad to get it handled early. (It had been in remission for several years & I wasn't thinking that way at all!) Also, in regards to the bladder/bowel problem, I have also found out since yesterday MON> that I have Diversticulosis...I didn't know I had that problem either. Neither are good but excellent to find out early and avoid the rush eh? You probably saved my life in this instance...a Sarcoid flare up paired with Pulmonary Hypertension is nothing to fiddle with. Thank you from the bottom (and top) of my heart.

For those who are unfamiliar with Annette, she is an extraordinary medium who has helped police bring some hardened criminals to justice. (Allison Dubois is not alone in this effort.) Annette also has exceptional flair as a medical intuitive. She has appeared on many TV and radio shows utilizing and discussing her talents.
In addition, Annette has led a full and exciting life traveling around the world. She raised two sons and has worked as a professional singer and actress.

SPECIFICS:
Annette explained to me, that I was a severe asthmatic child, with many allergies, and because my breathing was always compromised by asthmatic attacks, I learned to take very shallow breaths. Annette told me that I still breathe very shallow and frequently have dull headaches and run out of energy because of this behavioral pattern from childhood. All of these facts are true. I was an asthmatic child, with sever attacks, but as I got older, I outgrew the asthma, but still retained the breathing pattern! Annette suggested lots of cardiovascular exercise, running, swimming and even yoga, to increase my lung capacity. Annette also found that I have certain food allergies and those particular foods should be eliminated from my diet, at least for a while. She was right again! I do have food allergies to wheat, dairy products and refined sugars.
I followed all of her suggestions; I went back to the gym and started an exercise program, I became more cautious with what I ate, and as of the present date, I am free of all headaches, lost that extra 10 lbs. and I have an abundance of energy! I’ve thought of you every day since we talked during a reading a several months back and I’ve applied your suggestions in my daily life and it has helped me so much with purpose, insight and direction. Staying focused with doing one thing at a time, giving the seniors I work with 100% of me looking at them straight in the eyes for 10 minutes and then saying, “ I have to get back to my paper work”!
Wow…it has been magic….and just the direction I needed to set that boundary but not knowing how to do that with conviction and you gave that to me….I was so energized after I saw you…my mind was crystal clear and focused.
Another interesting thing that happened right away….you told me not to listen to loud music and I said, “I don’t listen to loud music” and you said “Good” but then the next day getting ready to ride my bike 10 miles.

My reading with Annette Martin was fantastic! I wanted to attend a college that had a wonderful psychology course and Annette saw that I should attend John F. Kennedy University. She saw that they would take me in right away and by God that is exactly what happened. I started a week later. She said it would be easy for me and that I am smarter than I think and that I would just "fly". I am getting all "A's" and finding that I know much more than my classmates. Annette said that I would find my true partner at JFK and Yes, I have! I asked about my health and Annette saw that the medication I was taking for my thyroid was too strong and suggested that the amount be lowered and looked at by the doctor. Hi Annette,
I spoke to you over 10 years ago in January of 1997, if I remember correctly. I thought my life was completely falling apart at the time, which is what prompted
me to seek out your advice. Looking back now, I realize it was just a major transition point in my life, and life was just giving me a helping hand at making the leap.
I came to you asking you if I had taken a wrong turn somewhere and that's why my life seemed to be imploding. I also wanted to know about the usual... if I
would be getting married... if I was going to have children... etc.
The 3 main things you told me were....
1. I would work for a company that was 3 letters and started with an "S". You guessed SGI.
I thought you were crazy because I had already interviewed with SGI and had already decided never to work for the company. I was convinced at the time that they would be out of business in 3 years. I was right.
You were right, though. Due to an unexpected sequence of events in my life, I ended up working for a new company later that same summer with 3-letters, starting with an "S". It was SUN Microsystems.
2. You mentioned that people were like plants and needed the right environment to thrive. You said that I didn't belong in California. I was surviving there, but that I wouldn't thrive there. You saw me in Texas. You also mentioned that this 3-letter company would transfer me to Texas. At this point, I knew you were crazy. I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and if there was one thing I was certain of... I was not going back to Texas. I also knew that neither SGI nor SUN had an engineering group in Texas at the time.
Well... where did I end up? In Austin, Texas, just as you had predicted. And, although SUN Microsystems did not have an engineering department in Austin when I moved there in April of 1999, I was allowed to work remotely. This all came about
through a very strange sequence of circumstances and was highly unusual. Eventually,this set off another sequence of events that prompted SUN to establish an engineering group and campus in Austin.
3. You predicted that I would not get married anytime soon and that I was not going to have a baby in the next year. You also got on my case about following the traditional path. You told me that I was a front line soldier in this war/transition/??? You explained that I had taken a job in a male-dominated field because it was my role in this cause.
It took me ten years to understand what you were saying to me, but I can honestly say now...I agree with you. I have finally embraced my life just the way it is and I couldn't be happier.
You know... I didn't even realize there were rules, or that I was unconsciously trying to follow them, until I embraced my life just the way it was. Whew! The things you can't see until
you make the shift... Amazing! Well... I'm so glad I'm finally getting a chance to tell you how right you were. T.H.
Annette Martin's reading: It was very right on! She made reference to a past life that are playing out now - very specific and precise lending confirmation and affirmations to changes I am making. I recently met a boyfriend and I have big plans for our future. Annette described in vivid details (without every being told of this) these identical plans and that we had contact in a past life that we have met again to pick up and continue. This is so correct as we both feel that we have known each other before.

So.... the prediction about my knee came true.... the knee thats had NO trouble at all... suddenly hurt like hell for a day and totally shocked me.
Its funny that the day it hurt so bad.. i was saying to rachelle.. why the hell is my knee hurting ? She gasped, “ ooooooo, Annette warned you about your knee and the girls all said "oooooooooooooooo!" Everyone was suitably in awe, lol.
The label you gave Ed was so accurate. The final confrontation came when a transformer blew in the area and when the power came up we fried a relay in the transmitter.. I was stressed and I asked him for support.. all he could talk about was HIM. I said Ed.. this is about me .. can we just this once let it be about me? Needless to say .. we couldn’t!
I’m now awaiting the prediction about the new man. I ended it with the long term guy...
